2016 Goals: The Fabulous Five

I’m only setting five goals for myself in 2016, but one of them has many parts.

1. Cook Every Recipe in the Sally’s Baking Addiction cookbook

It's definitely my favorite cookbook

It’s definitely my favorite cookbook

I had already started this goal before I realized what I was doing, just because there are so many good looking recipes in this book. Before the year even started, I had completed 28 recipes, meaning I have 45 more to go.

2. Finish my 2014 Goals

It’s always bothered my that 2014 fucked me up so much (for a variety of reasons), and I regret that stupid health things kept me from completing my goals. So I’m going to finish them up two years late. Here’s what I have to do to complete them:

2.a) Read All T-Z of Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable

I made it through S in 2014, so I only have seven letters to go.

2.b) Make a Pie Once a Month 7 pies

I managed to make five pies in 2014! So I just have to make 7 pies this year at some point, preferably kinds I’ve never done before. Which should help me tackle some recipes from Goal 1 too!

2. c) Make a new cocktail once a month

I didn’t make any cocktails in 2014 given that I couldn’t eat anything besides english muffins for most of it. I still don’t drink, so these are going to probably be non-alcoholic fancy drinks.

2. d) Get everything (then currently) on my to-read list off it

I’ve been kind of doing this anyway, since maintenance of my to-read list is basically a professional concern. At the end of 2014, I had 7 books to go, mostly ones my library doesn’t own. I’ve done pretty well on them since then:

Fair Coin by E.C. Myers: deleted from list because so-so reviews
Apron Anxiety by Alyssa Shelasky: ILLed, abandoned after the second chapter because of poor writing
Beyond: A Ghost Stary by Graham McNamee: deleted from list because of reviews
Vessel by Sarah Beth Durst: read in 2015 and LOVED
The Night Watch by Sergei Lukanenko: deleted from list because could it live up to the Terry Pratchett novel with the same title?
How to be a Woman by Caitlin Moran
The Fate of Mercy Alban by Wendy Webb

So this list now sits at a grand total of 2 books that I either have to ILL or buy.

2. e) Update my blog once a week seven times

I only missed 7 weeks in 2014 despite all the shittiness. Unless something even more dramatic happens to me in 2016, this one shouldn’t be hard to finish either.

3. Finish all my Craftsy classes

Craftsy sends me emails whenever classes are on sale, and I often cave. I currently own 5 classes, 4 of which I’ve never even opened. Here’s what I’ll be learning this year (hopefully):

craftsy

40 Ways to Cast On and Bind Off

I know like two of each, so I definitely need more study in this area.

40 Techniques Every Sewer Should Know

Ditto.

Sewing Vintage: The Flirty Day Dress

I’m not even sure why I bought this one, because I could easily go to the store, buy a pattern, and make a dress myself. I guess I know I take a lot of shortcuts and half-ass things when I’m making stuff, and I’d like to stop. Or at least know how to stop.

Knit Faster with Continental Knitting

I bought this class while I was making that sweater in 2015 and was SO SICK of stockinette stitch for a million rows. Anything to make that go faster.

Tunisian Crochet

This one I am about 50% done with, although I’ll probably have to go back and redo some of the videos since I’ve forgotten so much.

4. Complete a temperature scarf

Temperature scarves are data visualization + fashion so I’m kind of surprised I’ve never done one before. There’s lots of ways to do them, but I plan to knit one row of a scarf every day, the color determined by the temperature. For example:

There are a million of these online

There are a million of these online

I’m going to try to use only yarn I already have, so mine won’t be these colors.

5. Read 1 book a month someone else has recommended to me

I want to talk to my friends more about books. You can recommend a book to me here. I already have some from posting on facebook, many of which I’ve already read.

Bonus Addendum: Steven’s goals!

No, one of them is not to act less stupid

No, one of them is not to act less stupid

For the first time ever, Steven agreed to let me record his goals for the year too! Maybe he’s hoping the pressure of competition or the shame of disappointing the Internet will motivate him.

Steven Goal 1: Cook one vegetarian meal every week.

Steven says he feels his skills in this area have been left relatively untested, and he wants to branch out from his meat-centric cooking. And I always want to eat more vegetables, so it’s basically a win-win.

Steven Goal 2: Learn a new violin piece every month.

Steven plays in the Really Terrible Orchestra of the Triangle, but he never practices outside their once a week practices, because it’s hella easy (for him, what a nerd). He says he feels like his skills have atrophied and he wants to counteract that by working on music at his actual level.

Steven Goal 3: Finish all Craftsy classes.

Steven is even worse than I am about buying things when they’re on sale that he might want someday. His list of classes is longer, but tastier than mine:

Homemade Italian Pasta
Artisan Cheese Making
Danish Pastries from Scratch
Miniature French Desserts (Macarons, Madeleines, and More)
Homemade Salty Snacks
Artisan Bread Making
The Art of Stir-Frying

Unlike me, Steven has actually successfully completed one Craftsy class, the one that taught him to make his amazing homemade croissants. He also has made the macarons and madeleines from Miniature French desserts, so really he just has to tackle “and More.” I’m pretty excited for the results.

Steven Goal 4: Make at least one case or bag out of leather.

Steven’s hobby of the moment is leatherworking, and since he has a lot to use up, he wants to tackle something harder than a belt.

I’ll give you updates on our progress throughout the year, whether you want to know or not!

2015 Goals: I pretty much rock

Goodbye, 2015!!! Thank you for being so much better than shitty 2014, although of course there is still room for improvement. Here’s how I did on my goals this year:

1. Read 1 Book Each Month I Think I’ll Disagree With: 100%

I have to admit, Hate Book Club really helped me out with this one.

October: My Unfair Lady

My Unfair Lady by Kathryne Kennedy

My Unfair Lady by Kathryne Kennedy

We’ll talk more about this during my yearly book roundup later, but it’s a romance novel that features an American prospector’s daughter trying to learn how to be a real lady from a duke. It’s everything you can imagine and more.

November: Interview with a Vampire

This one was for Hate Book Club, and it really let me down. The hype had led me to believe it would be re-goddamn-diculous, and it ended up just being kind of boring.

December: Eat This, Not That

This one is like… if you want to eat healthy but only at fast food restaurants, here are the things that will kill you the least. Needless to say, it did not win me over.

2. Finish I Detonate Around Him: 100%

Bam! I know in my last update I said I was technically finished, but now I am FULL ON finished. With the stupid original trilogy, and the even stupider follow-up book ELJames published this year. Now it’s done for real. Until she writes something else, I guess.

And this will forever be in my "Read" list on GoodReads. THANKS, TUMBLR

And this will forever be in my “Read” list on GoodReads. THANKS, TUMBLR

3. Visit Every Restaurant on my Restaurants to Visit List: 87%

This is the one I really fell down on at the end. I have 4 restaurants left:

–Angus Barn, which is a hella expensive steak place with a “chef’s table” where you get to sit in the kitchen. That thing is booked solid for the foreseeable future.

–Abyssinia Ethiopian, which I legit TRIED to go to once, but their website lied about their hours, and I ended up going to a great cafe next door. After being burned once, I wasn’t willing to trust again.

–Pho Far East, which is like 40 minutes from here. That’s my only excuse.

–Saint-Jacques French Cuisine, which is also pricey.

I’m okay with this outcome. I discovered a lot of GREAT restaurants, that I have definitely been back to since.

4. Review at least 1 thing a month online: 100%

I’m a little disappointed in myself on this one, because I fell back on reviewing a lot of books on GoodReads. It’s the thing I feel most qualified reviewing. I did leave a critical review of a local store I have vowed never to go to again after being uncomfortable too many times, which is something I probably never would have done without this project.

5. One Guest Post a Month: 100%!!!!

This was the best one!!! But also the hardest. For all of us. In October, Steven wrote a post about his hobby of the moment, leatherworking. I was hoping he would write about his undying love for My Little Pony, but alas. In November, my friend Adrienne wrote about what it’s like to move abroad to Spain!! With great pictures! And in the final moments of the year, James Fox bookended 2015 with a guest post about video games!

I reread most of the guest posts last night, and they’re maybe my favorite New Years project ever. They’re all so different and funny and interesting. Thanks, everyone, who helped make it possible!

January: Bad Animes: First Blood, Part II (section 3.b) by James Fox
February: A Scholarly Ranking of America’s Next Top Model Winners by Rob

July: The REAL Story of the Dahlgrens’ trip to Europe by Cynthia
August: What it was like being “Dad Ladd” by Dad Ladd
September: All the Stuff I forgot to do in College by Brian
October: Adventures in Leather Costumery by Steven
November: The Rain in Spain by Adrienne
December: VIDEO GAMES, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bouncer by James Fox

6. Knit a Sweater: 100%!!!!

I can’t believe I did it!!!

Look at this beast

Look at this beast

7. Get Hella Into a Different DDC Class each month: 100%

The saving grace of this goal was that I wisely never specified a way to quantify “hella into”. I may have read only one book in each category towards the end but I DID IT, regardless.

Total: 98%

I’ll take it!! I’ll post my goals for 2016 soon.

Servery Challenge: Fall Edition

Exciting news! At a recent THE 434 reunion, we had a servery challenge!! And for the first time ever, the presentations were filmed!!

Rules: Participants had 15 minutes to cook their “fall” themed dish and think of a name. Voting is done by secret ballot to try to keep Rob from gaming the system, although even this is not fool-proof.

2015 Goal Update: 75% Awesome

The end of September marks the point where I should be 75% on all my goals for the year, something I know because I scribbled it on my work calendar next to “monster chef hat”. Being a children’s librarian is weird.

Anyway, I’m pleased to report that I’m headed for success!!! Which proves that I’m either doing a lot better than last year, health-wise, or that I’m just better at choosing reasonable goals for myself. Probably both. Here are the deets:

1. Read one book a month I think I’ll disagree with: 75%

July: Here’s the Situation: A Guide to Creeping on Chicks, Avoiding Grenades, and getting in your GTL on the Jersey Shore “by” Mike Sorrentino

I downloaded a library ebook to avoid immense shame at work

I downloaded a library ebook to avoid immense shame at work

You can read my more detailed thoughts on this here.

August: The O’Reilly Factor for Kids: A Survival Guide for America’s Families by Bill O’Reilly

I feel like he's trying to channel Mr. Rogers on the cover and I don't like it

I feel like he’s trying to channel Mr. Rogers on the cover and I don’t like it

I guess I didn’t disagree with this book as much as I thought I would. Some of his advice is fairly standard. Deal with bullies by talking to your parents and teachers instead of trying to fight them yourself. Be honest. Be respectful to adults. Don’t do drugs.

Of course, there was plenty to laugh at. Chapters were prefaced with quotes from “real teens”, which always sounded as legit to me as ELJames’ “American” dialog. On the other hand, any kids writing to Bill O’Reilly are probably sheltered and home-schooled beyond recognition so maybe their weird 1950s phrasings are 100% real. Also, the end of each chapter included “a few brief O’Reilly i-messages for you,” which were just bullet points that used weird abbreviation “Internet slang” that he made up, like “jja” for “just joking again.”

September: Trump: The Art of the Deal by Donald J. Trump

I read this for Hate Book Club, so you’ll hear more about it later. All I’ll say is that it was suuuuuuuuuper boring, and that afterwards I was compelled to watch the “That 80s Guy” episode of Futurama.

awesome_to_the_max

2. Finish I Detonate Around Him: 100%

Okay, so technically I finished this one, even though I then decided to do an addendum of ELJames’ incredibly stupid “50 Shades of Grey from a different perspective” novel.

3. Visit Every Restaurant on my Restaurants To Visit List: 84%

Yay!!!!!!! This goal is the most fun goal. The best restaurant I’ve been to for it recently has to be Chuck’s Burgers in Raleigh. I’m a sucker for a place that gives you multiple dipping choices for your fries, and the veggie burger was insane. Plus, creative milkshake flavors!!!

I only have 5 restaurnts left, actually! A fancy steak place, a fancy French place, Ethiopian, cheap Vietnamese that’s the farthest away from my apartment on the list, and a tapas place where parking’s probably going to be annoying. I feel like I can solidly conquer this by the end of the year!

4. Review at least 1 thing a month online: 75%

This goal is turning out to be the hardest, weirdly? I guess I find myself not feeling comfortable sharing my opinions in such a public way, especially if they’re negative. I keep wanting to preface them with “I mean, this was just my experience” or “Maybe it was just an off day” or whatever. Clearly I do not have the fortitude to be an Internet troll.

5. Plaid Pladd blog: one guest post per month: 75%

This might be my favorite goal!!! In July Cynthia wrote a hilarious write-up of the REAL story of her whirlwind trip through Europe, including a lot of amazing pictures, of the sort that I always take and then never share with anyone. Keep telling your truth, Bova! In August, my dad wrote a guest post about being my dad that serves as a great counterpoint to the one my mom wrote earlier about being my mom. Being my mom seems to involve a lot of cute pictures, while being my dad involves a constant barrage of insulting birthday cards. NOW YOU KNOW THE TRUTH. Most recently, Brian wrote a great write-up of things he missed in college that made me nostalgic and happy to not live in H-town anymore at the same time. But Brian is already an accomplished writer, so you knew he would rock it.

I have some exciting guest authors lined up for the last part of the year, but December is still wide open, if anyone wants to try their hand at it!

6. Knit a sweater: 80%

I am so close to being done with this, but the closer I get, the more nervous I become about the Moment of Truth when it’s finally revealed how lumpy and strange the sweater looks. I’ve done the sleeves and the neckband. All that’s left is blocking and sewing it together.

7. Get hella into a different Dewey Decimal class each month: 75%
Last month was my favorite! The 800s are literature, so I got to read some interesting books about the history of 1910s literary life in London and a famed 1700s children’s book author kidnapping an orphan and trying to raise her in secret as his perfect child bride. You know, the usual.

Total: 81%!!!

Previously: Halfway point
Next: Done!

2015 Goal Update: Halfway!!

It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through 2015 already!! Time, once again, to check in on my yearly goals. Honestly, these updates are the only thing keeping me honest about them. Here we go.

1. Read one book a month I think I’ll disagree with: 50%

I had to break out of my habit of reading these in conjunction with Goal 7 because there wasn’t a lot to choose from in, say, the language section. I pretty much agree with linguists about the history of the English language, for instance. All the books this time around I got as ebooks for free, either through Amazon or Overdrive.

April: Neverland by Anna Katmore

I was pretty sure this would be terrible because Sexy YA Captain Hook

I was pretty sure this would be terrible because Sexy YA Captain Hook

What if a girl from our world was magically transported to Neverland? And Captain Hook wasn’t a sketch old dude trying to murder children, but a hot, misunderstood teen? This book wasn’t as terrible as I thought. There was some legitimate world-building there, and I remain mildly curious about the sequel. However, I was judging it leniently based on the $0 I paid for it, not the $2.99 it’ll cost you if you don’t have Prime.

May: How to Spice Up Your Marriage in 7 Days by Imogen Barnet

Okay, this book was legitimately hilarious. Most of the advice was pretty standard, basic information, like “talk to each other about what you like” and “remember to kiss sometimes.” But there were some key tips that taught me my marriage is in no way spicy.

Look deep into each others’ eyes for four full minutes. Set your phone alarm.

This is supposed to make you feel “closer” and help you bond, but it is legit just creepy.

Give gifts, even simple things like a flower, shell, or stone.

HERE STEVEN, TAKE THIS ROCK I FOUND. IS THIS MARRIAGE SPICY ENOUGH FOR YOU YET?

June: Radical by David Platt

In this book David Platt attempts to come to terms with megachurch culture in America in light of the basic Christian tenets of humility, charity, and simplicity. It was interesting to get an insider perspective on megachurches, although some of his solutions for cutting back seemed kind of pale to me. “One day a week we study the Bible instead of using our pyrotechnics.” Nice try.

2. Finish I Detonate Around Him: 100%

WHATTTTTTT! Finished!

Ugh, then just a month after my last post, ELJames released a terrible side book from Christian’s POV, so now I’m doing that too. But I’m still counting it as done.

3. Visit Every Restaurant on my Restaurants To Visit List: 74%

The best one I’ve been to since last update is Battistella’s, an awesome Cajun restaurant in downtown Raleigh! Definitely worth the drive!

4. Review at least 1 thing online a month: 50%

I’m also proud to say that I’ve finally given a place less than 5 stars!! The Cary Cafe near me got 4 stars (because they are sometimes too crowded to find a seat, and their hours can be weird), the Neverland book (see above) got 2 stars, and Rick Moonen’s RM Seafood got 3 stars. I know that seems weird after the awesomeness that is the ice cream dessert, but unless you are going specifically for that, I would definitely not go back.

rmseafood

5. Plaid Pladd Blog: One guest post per month: 42%

In April, Melissa wrote some craft tutorials, in May my voice-twin Anna taught me how to make the best soup, and before the end of June, Alana should have an amazing guest post up! Then this will jump to 50%

6. Knit a sweater: 70%

I haven’t done too much since the last time we talked. I now have a front, a back, and a sleeve. I’ve been putting off doing the other sleeve because ugggh I already did that once, so boring, and then there’s sewing it together and blocking. But I don’t really have motivation to do it in the 100 degree weather.

7. Get hella into a different Dewey Decimal Class every month: 50%

This is definitely the goal that’s suffered the most when I get busy, but I have managed to read some cool science books this month, particularly children’s ones. Plus, I didn’t quantify what “hella into” means, so I can still count it. It’s all about leaving yourself outs.

Total: 62%

Woooo ahead of schedule for once!!

2015 Goal Update: March

Since we’re about a quarter of the way through 2015, I thought it was time to give you an update on my 2015 goals! I’m off to a good start!

1.Read 1 book each month I think I’ll disagree with: 25%

So far I’ve been doing this one in conjunction with Goal 7:

January: The New Lifetime Reading Plan by Clifton Fadiman and John S. Major

I was so sure this one would be only full of dead white guy writers, but there were actually a ton of international works. I put a bunch of things on my to-read list. A pleasant surprise!

February: Don’t Be That Girl by Travis Stork

The cover is particularly insulting

The cover is particularly insulting

A guide written by a former Bachelor contestant about how to stop being bad stereotypes of women and how to start being a stereotype of women that Travis Stork approves of. The best is the chapter where he tells you you’re too good at your job and it’s intimidating to potential dates.

March: The Frazzled Female by Cindi Wood

This book had some good points about taking time to relax and practice mindfulness and self-care. But in general it was very repetitive and I didn’t care for the writing style. Or being called a female.

2. Finish I Detonate Around Him: 75%

This is my tumblr that critiques 50 Shades of Grey. I’m about 80% done with the last book!! And then I have my traditional wrap up posts where I make graphs like a huge nerd.

Pictured: Something a huge nerd would do

Pictured: Something a huge nerd would do

It’s been 3 years, so I’m looking forward to finally being done.

3. Visit every restaurant on my list of restaurants to visit: 58%

This is kind of cheating because the list included things that I already had visited before the start of this year. But after last year’s abject failure, I needed something to give me an edge! So far probably the coolest thing we’ve tried is Escazu chocolates, where you can get historical hot chocolates, made from recipes as far back as the 1500s!

We all know Cortes could hot chocolate like a boss

We all know Cortes could hot chocolate like a boss

4. Review at least 1 thing online a month: 25%

So far I have only reviewed places I really like (La Farm, Carolina Popcorn Shoppe, Goji Bistro) to make it easier. Eventually I promise to give something less than 5 stars, but I have to work up the nerve.

5. Plaid Pladd Blog: One guest blog post per month: 25%

So far we have had three great guest blogs!!!! James Fox gave us a thorough look at his studies into bad anime, Rob wrote a nice excerpt from his ongoing examination into America’s Next Top Model, and Mom Ladd wrote about the perils and rewards of being Mom Ladd.

6. Knit a sweater: 60%

This is just an estimate, but I’ve finished the front, back, and most of one sleeve. It looks good so far!!

7. Get hella into a different Dewey Decimal Class each month: 25%

So far, the 100s have been my favorite!

Total: 42%

Pretty good for March!

Servery Challenge: North Carolina Edition!

It is with great confusion that I report our strangest servery challenge to date. Everything with edible?? There was no clear winner? Rob’s didn’t shave a few years off my life?? Yes, all true. Usually these cooking competitions feature one entry that is the worst thing you’ve ever had in your mouth, one that seems good by comparison, and the rest just various brands of mediocre. But this time…? Maybe it was that we each got 25 minutes to cook. Maybe it was our new and improved kitchen set up. Maybe it was Brian Reinhart. Maybe the theme, THE SPIRIT OF NORTH CAROLINA, made everyone strive for greatness.

Rob's was definitely the most surprising. In that it tasted good

Rob’s was definitely the most surprising. In that it tasted good

Rob
Time: ~22 minutes
Dish Name: Stick it in Your Mouth
Description: Southern-style biscuits with bacon cooked in pepper jelly with pimento cheese

For someone who grew up in Syracuse, Rob definitely understands North Carolina food. The bacon was the main issue with this one–it was chewy and hard to eat in pieces. But I’ll take it over strawberries mixed with pickle juice any day.

Brian went all out for his first servery challenge

Brian went all out for his first servery challenge

Brian
Time: ~20 minutes
Dish Name: Sheesh-Carolina
Description: Sausage, Shallots, and Cherry Tomatoes on a stick, cooked in Cheerwine

These were actually pretty tasty! I feel like it could have done a little better highlighting the Cheerwine, the main thing that makes this dish North Carolina-related. Brian had never tried it before buying it to make this challenge, so he was trusting in North Carolina to make something great. Of course, his trust was not misplaced.

Awww yeah

Awww yeah

Patricia
Time: ~12 minutes
Dish Name: Shakalacky
Description: A Cackalacky milkshake made with Carolina Creamery vanilla ice cream and Mapleview milk

True to my usual strategy of making something quick and easy, I went for a dish with only three, beautiful, entirely local ingredients. Cackalacky is a sweet potato-based hot sauce made in Chapel Hill, and the key to success was using just enough of it to give the milkshake a little kick.

Also, ridic plating. Very important.

Also, ridic plating. Very important.

You KNOW Steven went overboard. It's pretty much a servery challenge given

You KNOW Steven went overboard. It’s pretty much a servery challenge given

Steven
Time: ~45 minutes
Dish Name: Shrimp N’ Grits
Description: Wild-caught shrimp, North Carolina grits, a roux of mushroom and ham gravy

Steven’s was legitimately what we had for dinner. Dude pretty much ignored the time limit because “I’m hungry.” Shrimp and grits is more of a South Carolina thing?? But these were delicious. But can you really still be considered if you took almost twice as long as everyone else? Time limit was 25 minutes…

Deliciousness v. time, the perennial Steven debate

Deliciousness v. time, the perennial Steven debate

Anyway, in the end we had a four-way tie with each of us getting one vote. So maybe it’s up to you to decide?? Cast your votes now!

2015 Goals

In what has become a yearly tradition, it’s time to list my goals for 2015! I mainly write blog posts about them to hold myself accountable. It’s way more motivation to accomplish things when you know you’ll have to explain yourself to the internet if you don’t. This year I have seven goals again, which seems a little audacious considering how well last year’s six goals went. But 2015 is going to be awesome and I can do this! But I might need your help (see below).

1. Read 1 book each month I think I’ll disagree with

I thought of this goal when I decided to check out Rush Limbaugh’s ridiculous time-traveling children’s book to laugh at one weekend. The thought occurred to me while driving home from work that what if it was good??? This seemed kind of unlikely, but there was always a chance that dude managed to restrain his intense grossness for the children. And he kind of did? In that this book was just massively boring instead of actively trying to kill me with its terribleness. Anyway, I determined to become more informed about things I think I disagree with, and at least give other people the chance I would hope they’d grant me. Plus, if they don’t manage to change my mind, at least I’ll be more informed about the things I dislike.

Like that time I read all the Twilight books

Like that time I read all the Twilight books

2. Finish I Detonate Around Him
Speaking of things I dislike, it’s finally time to get back to my tumblr that mocks the 50 Shades of Grey series. I’m on the third book, I can power through this bullshit.

3. Visit every restaurant on my list of restaurants to visit
Last year I checked out a book about restaurants in the triangle, and naturally made a spreadsheet of all the ones that sounded cool. But you know my spreadsheets just get ignored unless I make a big deal blog project out of them.

4. Review at least 1 thing online a month
I realized last year that I rely heavily on online reviews when deciding things like what blender to buy or where to take my car for an oil change, but I never write online reviews myself. That is going to change right now! I have to start giving back for the good of the community.

5. Plaid Pladd Blog: One guest blog post per month
This is where I need your help. I thought it might be fun to invite people who aren’t me to write blog posts, especially people who don’t have their own blog or can’t be bothered to update it regularly because that shit’s hard, man, I get it. You could write a blog post about anything! Here are just some ideas:

1) a review of some restaurant or place you love (or hate?) with pictures!
2) a book review
3) a tutorial on something you know how to do
4) explain your daily schedule in gifs
5) why something you love is awesome and/or something you hate is stupid
6) you can answer some of my spam mail if you want
7) THE ONLY LIMIT IS YOUR IMAGINATION

Hit me up if you’re into it. Or I can badger you about it when I get desperate in August. Your choice.

This guy already agreed, so you know it's solid

This guy already agreed, so you know it’s solid

6. Knit a sweater

Oh yeah, it’s back. Technically in 2013 I vowed to knit a cardigan, not a sweater, and I’m already more confident that this will get done where that one totally failed. Because it’s purple so I automatically love it more. I’m using a pattern out of this book:

The Knit Parade by Rebecca Rymsza

The Knit Parade by Rebecca Rymsza

7. Get hella into a different Dewey Decimal Class each month

You're no John Cotton Dana, but I'll take it

You’re no John Cotton Dana, but I’ll take it

This goal is related to #1, sort of, in that I’m worried about my narrow focus of only choosing books I think I’ll like. You miss a lot that way! Time to break out of that filter bubble and explore some new territory.

This month is the 000 class, which is kind of the “whatever, just add that in there since it doesn’t fit anywhere else” of the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Like, I just went to the library and checked out a book on the history of statistics and also one on IS ATLANTIS REAL? because those two things belong together.

Updates when I feel like it! It’s going to be a good year.
